Ask your doctor how often you should check your blood glucose on your own. Also ask your doctor for an A1C test at least twice a year. Your A1C number gives your average blood glucose for the past 3 months. The results from your blood glucose checks and your A1C test will tell you whether your diabetes care plan is working. Use diabetes test strips and blood glucose meters to test your blood.

Physical activity is an important part of staying healthy, losing weight and controlling your blood glucose. Keep these points in mind:
* Ask your doctor whether you should have a snack before you exercise.
* Talk with your doctor about what types of exercise are safe for you.
* Warm up and stretch for 5 to 10 minutes before you exercise. Then cool down for several minutes after you exercise. For example, walk slowly at first, stretch, and then walk faster. Finish up by walking slowly again.

People with diabetes can reduce their risk for complications if they are educated about their disease, learn and practice the skills necessary to better control their blood glucose levels, as well as blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and receive regular checkups. Smokers should stop smoking, and overweight women with diabetes should develop moderate exercise regimens under the guidance of a health care provider to help them lose weight and achieve a healthy weight.
